Overview

“Tired of being on the heights, I deliberately went to the depths.”

Wilde Without the Boy is Gareth Armstrong’s dramatisation of De Profundis, the passionate letter Oscar Wilde wrote to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, from his gaol cell towards the end of Wilde’s prison sentence for gross indecency. In the second half of the evening, Gerard Logan performs Wilde’s haunting poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol which narrates the execution of a fellow prisoner. It is underscored by Simon Slater’s beautiful and specially commissioned musical score.

Oscar Wilde’s plays include The Importance of Being Earnest. Gerard Logan’s extensive stage career includes roles at the National Theatre and RSC, where he was nominated for an Olivier Award. Simon Slater is an award-winning composer.
