Overview

“Single we found we nothing could obtain”

Clarissa and Araminta are both married to malicious, payday loansharks who have replaced their love for their own wives with an obsession for each other’s. Both women have maxed out the credit they’ve been forced to survive on to keep them in shopping and gambling – and their local pawnbroker’s patience is wearing thin. How will they continue, and how will they break this cycle of distrust and drudgery? Only by joining forces… The Confederacy is Vanbrugh’s take on marriage (and how to live with it). Vanbrugh’s successes with The Relapse and The Provok’d Wife had already established him as a great talent, where female characters carried the plot; but in 1705’s The Confederacy, he empowers them to bring about change.

Hermione Gulliford directs this rehearsed reading of Vanbrugh’s wickedly funny comedy, featuring an all-star cast including Linda Bassett, Nicholas Le Prevost, Lorna Brown, Ian Gelder and Finty Williams. Discover one of the laugh-out-loud treats of Restoration theatre.
