Overview
“If I speak, I become like any other comedian…”
Charlie Chaplin was in and out of the workhouse twice before the age of nine but by 1918, he was the most famous man in the world; he was 29 years old. For forty years, he was one of America’s most beloved filmmakers but then in 1952 he was banned from the US for his anti-authoritarian politics. Smile is a dazzling one-man homage to a cinematic icon and arguably the greatest physical comedian of all time.
With sell-out runs and five-star reviews across the globe, this is a joyful and poignant theatrical gem that celebrates the genius of Chaplin through mime, physical comedy and daredevil tomfoolery. Following a sold out run at Edinburgh Fringe and winning the Best Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe, Smile comes to Jermyn Street Theatre this Autumn – delivered with warmth, wit and Marcel Cole’s signature mastery.
