Overview

“Whatever Rosalba might not do, she cheers things up! Avanti!

1919. On the windswept isle of Sirene, a group of Extraordinary Women dare to imagine a world without men. Into this bohemian paradise arrives Rosalba — her pockets may be empty but her plans for romantic intrigues are full. Her devoted lover Aurora follows and promptly buys a palatial villa in the hopes that an idyllic address might persuade Rosalba that the ties that bind needn’t chafe. But Rosalba isn’t one to be so easily tethered, and as the Summer unfolds, this glittering coterie sets out to enjoy their freedom…and each other. Avanti, Signori!

Published the same year as Virginia Woolf’s OrlandoCompton Mackenzie (Whisky Galore!, Monarch of the Glen)’s novel draws its richly drawn characters from the artistic circles of 1928 London. It bursts on to the stage for the first time with a lush score by Tony Award winner Sarah Travis, lyrics by Richard Stirling and an all-star cast of Jack Butterworth, Sophie Louise Dann, Jasmine Kerr, Amira Matthews, Amy Ellen Richardson, and Caroline Sheen.
